HISTORY OF ALTUNA

1921

FOUNDATION

Altuna Hermanos SA was founded in Oñate (Zubillaga neighborhood). Since then Altuna manufactures all its tools in the same locality. The factory is self-sufficient thanks to the electricity produced by a hydraulic generator using the water power of the Oñati river, which flows down from the Aizkorri natural park.

1942

AUSTE ESTANA

The trademark “Auste Estana” is created, which in Basque (regional language) means unbreakable.

1960

INTERNATIONALIZATION

The company starts its export activity in Latin America, receiving an award for its quality and for being pioneers in this activity.

1970

ALTUNA BRAND

All scissors are manufactured under the ALTUNA brand name. It is still marketed under the trade name Auste Estana together with A.H. de Altuna Hermanos.

1978

BIKAIN BRAND

The Bikain brand is created for the design, manufacture and marketing of garden tools and accessories.

1983

MODERNIZATION

Floods devastate the entire region, rendering almost the entire factory unusable. With the invaluable help of the workers, the factory is rebuilt and the machinery and installations are modernized.

1999

DICOAL IS BORN

Altuna creates a new division called Dicoal, which is dedicated to the design, manufacture and distribution of products oriented to the hardware, do-it-yourself and agricultural sectors in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal).

2002

CARBON FIBER

The carbon fiber (“Carbon Fiber”) range is introduced, Altuna being the first and only manufacturer to date to produce and develop a range of tools in this material, with maximum lightness, balance and performance. Subsequently the new series will be awarded in France in 2020 as an innovation.
